New Paintings is Benjamin Demeyere's sixteenth solo exhibition at gallery De Zwarte Panter. He explores themes such as beauty, academicism, memory, absence, engagement, travel, immobility, recollection, and oblivion — possibly to avoid forgetting. Additionally, it addresses limitations and freedom, based on his exotic studies that he has been working on for over ten years.
But more than about themes, it is about painting and color. First, by separating them to give each color its own identity. Then, by layering them one over the other, in an attempt to evoke an illusion, an emotion. Losing oneself in patterns, approaching the canvas as a playground and as an abstract surface.
