An enchanting experience between dream and reality
During Zomer van Antwerpen, artist Grace Tjang invites visitors into a unique world of light, shadow, and memories. With MALAM / NIGHT, she creates a sensory installation and performance where personal history, nature, and imagination come together in a poetic way.
Inspired by Wayang, the traditional Javanese shadow play, and the stories of her ancestors, Tjang builds a fascinating universe where the past and present meet.
An ode to memories and heritage
In MALAM / NIGHT, the night is central as a place of reflection, dreams, and memories. Grace Tjang delves deep into her family history and draws inspiration from the stories of her parents, grandparents, and ancestors.
By taking plants, natural structures, and transience as a starting point, a visual language emerges that makes the continuous cycles of nature and history visible. The result is an intimate yet universal experience that invites visitors to reflect on their own memories.
An installation by day, a performance by night
Visitors can experience MALAM / NIGHT in two ways.
During the day, the installation is free to access, allowing you to wander freely among the light projections, shadows, and artworks that together form a dreamy landscape.
In the evening, the space transforms into a performative presentation where Grace Tjang takes visitors on a special journey between reality and imagination. The combination of light, sound, movement, and shadow creates a unique experience that lingers long after.
A special creation during Zomer van Antwerpen
For this edition of Zomer van Antwerpen, Grace Tjang expands her original installation into a poetic garden where beauty and threat coexist. The performance raises questions about the relationship between humans and nature and explores how memories continue to live on through generations.
